The propername is an "Ad Mat" or more specifically “WOOD AD MAT" Many from my collection have the words "Wood Ad Mat" stamped on the back. THIS ISFROM THE 1954 FILM "3 RING CIRCUS"STARRING JERRY LEWIS & DEAN MARTIN!! This is an EXTREMELY RARE and unusual item! How Rare??? I Challenge youto find another! Please read my entire description BEFORE looking to avoid either of us from being disappointed!! This Ad Mat measures aprox.4 1/2" X3 3/4".It is inExcellent Condition. It appears that it was used as there is a tiny bit distortion & some minor discoloration/staining. These "WOOD ADMATS" are really Molds/Lead Forms that wereintended to have molten lead poured into to them create castings, andthen discarded. This was the way that Newspaper ads, press book Ad Matsand various publications were produced up until the mid 1960's. Mostnewspapers were done via letterpress printing and utilized what iscalled hot type. The lead was melted and then used to type out wordsand imprint pictures. Pictures were usually in the form of one of thesemolds, which is composed of a wood fiber material specially, designedto accept the molten lead. Once cooled the casting was secured in thedesired position in the letterpress, inked and paper placed on top ofthe lead casting. The press was then brought down under pressure and'whala' a spiffy movie ad for a film coming to a theater near you!Electronic typesetting made this process obsolete over 40 years ago!Today's computers and technology make this process extremely efficient.The Extremely Fine artwork in this is just incredible! My picture justdoes not do it justice at all. " 3 RING CIRCUS" Jerry Hotchkiss (Jerry Lewis) and Pete Nelson (Dean Martin) are discharged from the army and get jobs at the circus. Saadia (Zsa Zsa Gabor) is the circus’ top performer and has eyes for Pete. The tension builds between the circus owner Jill (Joanne Dru) Pete, and Jerry. Jerry is allowed to go on as a clown and overshadows the head clown, who is fired when he complains. Jerry becomes Jerrico the Wonder Clown, Pete finally dumps Saadia and falls for Jill, who is in love with him, and everyone makes up at the orphan’s charity benefit. There are many funny sequences in this film which include Jerry trying to shave the bearded lady, played by Elsa Lanchester.
